TRICARE Accepted
Physician-Led Weight Loss Care for TRICARE Patients
Yes. Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic accepts TRICARE.
TRICARE coverage depends on the reason for your visit and your specific benefit. TRICARE does not cover office visits solely for nonsurgical obesity or weight reduction, while other covered medical conditions and the pharmacy benefit follow separate rules.
Your care is led by Dr. Joseph Okoye, MD, FACP, a board-certified Internal Medicine physician practicing medicine for over 35 years. Dr. Okoye is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
Initial and follow-up visits are available in person at our Charlotte office or virtually for patients located in North Carolina or South Carolina.
Medical weight management at our clinic brings together physician evaluation, prescription medication, nutrition and physical activity treatment, metabolic health assessment, ongoing monitoring, and long-term follow-up.
Yes, We Accept TRICARE
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic accepts TRICARE and provides physician-led medical weight management for TRICARE patients and their families.
We participate in TRICARE and bill TRICARE for covered medical services we provide. Whether a particular visit is covered depends on the reason for the visit and your plan's benefit rules. TRICARE currently excludes office visits solely for nonsurgical obesity or weight reduction.
If you are also being evaluated or treated for a covered medical condition, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, or another medical problem, coverage is based on that condition and the services actually provided.
TRICARE covers office visits for diagnosing or treating a specific illness, condition, or set of symptoms. That is the distinction that matters here: a visit addressing a genuine medical condition is treated differently from a visit whose only purpose is weight reduction.
We see TRICARE beneficiaries including military families, retirees, National Guard and Reserve members, spouses, and adult dependents. Military families move often, and continuity of care is one of the first things to get lost along the way. Here you see the same physician at every visit, whether you come to the Charlotte office or meet virtually.
Your medical benefit and pharmacy benefit are different.
TRICARE's medical benefit determines whether the physician service you receive is covered. TRICARE currently excludes visits solely for nonsurgical obesity or weight reduction.
Prescription weight-loss medications are handled separately through the TRICARE pharmacy benefit and have their own eligibility, prior-authorization, and cost rules.
Before Your Visit: Verify Your Coverage
TRICARE benefits vary by plan and by the reason for care. Our team can help with the insurance process, but your TRICARE plan is the final authority on coverage and patient cost.
Call your plan before your appointment and ask two questions:
- Is this clinic covered for my medical visits? Give them our name, Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic, PLLC, in Charlotte, North Carolina, and ask what your visit will cost you.
- What does my pharmacy benefit cover for weight management medication? Ask what is included, what requires prior authorization, and what you would pay.
The number to call is on the back of your card. Write down what they tell you and bring it to your visit. That one phone call removes most of the surprises.
Bring your TRICARE card and your written notes to your first appointment. Our team will work from what your plan told you.
What We Handle for You
Once you are a patient, the paperwork is ours.
We File Your Claims
We submit claims to TRICARE for covered medical services provided at our clinic. If a service is excluded from the TRICARE benefit, we explain the self-pay option before proceeding.
We Submit Prior Authorization
When a prescription requires prior authorization, our team prepares and submits it. That includes the clinical documentation your plan asks for: BMI, weight-related medical conditions, laboratory results, treatment history, and Dr. Okoye's clinical rationale.
We do this work for you and we follow up on it. What we cannot do is decide the outcome. Approval belongs to your plan and its pharmacy benefit, not to the clinic.
If Coverage Is Denied or Partial
If a medication is not covered, or is covered only in part, we talk through what is left. That conversation happens with your physician, based on your medical situation, and it usually has more options in it than people expect.
Your care can continue regardless of the pharmacy decision. Covered medical services are billed according to your TRICARE benefit, and self-pay is available for excluded weight-management services.
Which TRICARE Situation Applies to You?
TRICARE benefits are not the same for every patient. Your coverage depends on your TRICARE plan, the reason for your visit, the medication being prescribed, and whether referral or prior authorization requirements apply.
Here are the most common situations.
Scenario 1: You have TRICARE Prime and want help with weight management
TRICARE Prime members generally receive most care through their primary care manager. A referral is usually required for routine or specialty care received from another provider.
A referral, however, does not automatically make an excluded service covered. TRICARE currently excludes nonsurgical treatment when obesity or weight reduction is the purpose of the service.
If you also have a medical condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, or another covered condition, Dr. Okoye can evaluate and treat that condition based on your actual medical needs and applicable TRICARE rules.
For prescription weight-loss medications, TRICARE has a separate pharmacy pathway for eligible Prime beneficiaries.
What to do: before scheduling, check whether your plan requires a referral and what services are authorized.
Scenario 2: You have TRICARE Select, Reserve Select, or Retired Reserve
TRICARE Select members usually do not need a referral for most primary or specialty-care appointments, although some services require pre-authorization.
That does not mean every weight-management service is covered. TRICARE's exclusion for nonsurgical obesity and weight-reduction treatment still applies.
If your visit involves another covered medical condition, coverage depends on the actual diagnosis, the services provided, and your plan's rules.
Weight-loss medication is handled separately through the TRICARE pharmacy benefit.
Scenario 3: You want Wegovy or Zepbound for weight management
TRICARE currently provides a pharmacy-authorization pathway for weight-management medications including Wegovy®, Zepbound®, and Saxenda® for beneficiaries enrolled in qualifying Prime, Select, and certain related plans.
You must meet TRICARE's clinical criteria, the prescription must come from a TRICARE network provider, and prior authorization is required.
There is an important cost distinction.
TRICARE's current published guidance states that beneficiaries pay 100% of the cost of weight-loss medications even when prior authorization is approved.
An approved prior authorization therefore does not necessarily mean that TRICARE will pay part of the medication cost. Confirm your own cost with your plan before you fill a prescription.
Our role is to determine whether a medication is medically appropriate and to provide accurate clinical documentation when authorization requirements apply.
Scenario 4: You have TRICARE For Life
TRICARE For Life works differently because it is Medicare wraparound coverage.
As of August 31, 2025, the TRICARE pharmacy benefit does not cover weight-loss medications for TRICARE For Life beneficiaries when obesity is the primary condition being treated.
Beginning July 1, 2026, however, eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries may have another pathway through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program.
You do not need Medicare Part D simply because you have TRICARE For Life. Part D is an optional and separate decision, and enrollment can affect your costs and your prescription coverage.
If you have TRICARE For Life and are considering the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, review the Medicare requirements before changing your prescription coverage.
Learn about the the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
Scenario 5: You have type 2 diabetes and need a GLP-1 medication
This is different from using a medication solely for weight management.
TRICARE currently covers certain GLP-1 medications, including Ozempic®, Mounjaro®, Trulicity®, and Victoza®, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes when the patient meets the applicable clinical and prior-authorization requirements.
Dr. Okoye treats the diagnosis the patient actually has. A diabetes medication is not prescribed under a diabetes diagnosis simply to obtain weight-loss coverage.
Scenario 6: You are an active duty service member
Active duty service members generally need a referral for care received outside their assigned military hospital, clinic, or primary care manager. That includes virtual care.
If you are active duty, confirm the appropriate referral or authorization before receiving outside care so that you understand your benefits and any potential costs.
Scenario 7: You want a virtual visit
TRICARE covers many virtual health services, and the referral requirements are generally the same as they are for in-person care.
Telehealth does not change whether the underlying service itself is covered. Making a visit virtual does not convert an excluded nonsurgical obesity-treatment service into a covered service.
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic provides virtual visits to patients located in North Carolina and South Carolina. Before a TRICARE virtual visit, we recommend confirming the applicable plan and referral requirements.
Scenario 8: TRICARE does not cover the service or medication you want
You can still choose physician-led medical weight-management care outside the TRICARE benefit.
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic offers self-pay options for patients who choose to receive services that their insurance does not cover. Prescription medication can also be discussed separately.
Commercial manufacturer copay cards generally exclude patients enrolled in TRICARE and other government-funded health programs. Separate cash-pay or manufacturer self-pay programs may have different eligibility requirements.
See CWL visit pricing and self-pay options, or see current weight-loss medication savings and self-pay information.
Medical Care and Medication Coverage Are Separate Questions
The most important thing to understand is that these are four different questions, and the answers can be different for the same patient:
- Will TRICARE cover this particular medical visit?
- Do I need a referral or authorization?
- Will TRICARE authorize this medication?
- How much will I actually pay for the medication?
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic can help you understand the clinical side of your treatment. Your TRICARE plan determines your benefits, your authorization requirements, and your cost-sharing.
Common Reasons Patients Come to Us
Separate from the benefit questions above, these are the clinical situations we see most often.
You just moved to the Charlotte area
A PCS move breaks continuity of care more reliably than almost anything else. If you were being treated for weight elsewhere, bring whatever records you have: prior visit notes, your medication history and doses, and recent labs. Dr. Okoye reviews what was working, what was not, and where to pick up rather than starting you over from zero.
You are already taking a GLP-1 and need someone to continue your care
This is one of the most common reasons people call us. Bring your current medication and dose, how long you have been on it, how you have tolerated it, and your most recent labs and weights.
Dr. Okoye reviews whether the current plan still fits your health, whether the dose is right, and what your monitoring should look like going forward. Continuing a medication safely is a clinical decision, not a refill.
You were told no somewhere else
A denied prior authorization is not the end of the conversation. Bring the denial letter if you have it, along with anything your plan told you about why.
Sometimes the documentation was incomplete. Sometimes a different medication fits your medical picture better. Sometimes the right answer is a self-pay path. Dr. Okoye reviews your situation and our team resubmits when resubmission is warranted.
You live in South Carolina
Dr. Okoye is licensed in South Carolina as well as North Carolina, so virtual visits are available to you when you are located in South Carolina at the time of the visit. Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and Indian Land are also a straightforward drive to the Charlotte office if you prefer to be seen in person.
You are a dependent or spouse, not the sponsor
You do not need the sponsor present to be seen. Bring your own TRICARE card and the coverage information from your call to the plan. When you verify coverage, ask about your own benefit specifically rather than the household's.
What Your Care Includes
Comprehensive Medical Evaluation
Your first visit is a medical evaluation, not simply a prescription visit.
Dr. Okoye reviews your weight history, previous weight-loss efforts, current medications, medical conditions, symptoms, family history, risk factors, and goals.
The purpose is to understand why weight management has been difficult and which treatments fit your overall health.
See what to expect at your first visit.
Obesity and Metabolic Risk Assessment
Weight can affect much more than the number on a scale.
Your evaluation can include review of:
- blood pressure
- blood sugar and diabetes risk
- cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
- weight-related medical conditions
- medications that can affect weight
- sleep, activity, appetite, and eating patterns
When obesity and chronic medical conditions overlap, they should be treated together rather than as unrelated problems.
Learn more about our chronic disease management and medical weight loss approach.
Tanita Body Composition Analysis
For patients seen in person, we offer Tanita body composition analysis.
Body composition gives us additional information about body fat, muscle, and other measurements that cannot be seen from weight alone.
Tanita testing is performed at the Charlotte office and is not available during a virtual visit.
Laboratory Evaluation and Monitoring
Laboratory testing is reviewed as part of your medical evaluation and treatment plan.
Testing is ordered based on your medical history and clinical needs rather than as a one-size-fits-all panel.
Labs can help identify or monitor concerns such as blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid function, kidney and liver health, and other medical factors that can affect weight treatment.
Prescription Weight Loss Medication Assessment
Prescription medication is one of the major tools we use in medical weight management.
Dr. Okoye reviews FDA-approved weight-loss medications, including GLP-1 treatment, in the context of your health history, current medications, goals, safety considerations, and insurance benefit.
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic uses FDA-approved brand-name medications. We do not use compounded GLP-1 medications.
Medication is integrated with your medical evaluation, nutrition and activity treatment, monitoring, and follow-up rather than treated as a stand-alone product.
Explore our prescription weight loss medication options, or read our GLP-1 medication guide.
Nutrition and Physical Activity Treatment
Nutrition and physical activity are active parts of obesity treatment.
The goal is not simply to tell you to “eat less and exercise more.”
Your plan is built around your health, medications, appetite, daily routine, physical limitations, weight history, and treatment goals.
Care for Related Medical Conditions
Obesity often overlaps with medical problems such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, and other metabolic conditions.
Because Dr. Okoye is an Internal Medicine physician, these problems can be considered as part of the same medical picture.
That matters because successful weight management should improve health, not simply change a number on the scale.
Learn more about medical weight loss and chronic disease management.
Ongoing Physician Follow-Up
Medical weight management is ongoing care.
Follow-up visits allow us to review your progress, response to treatment, medication tolerance, nutrition and activity, weight trend, medical conditions, and next steps.
Your treatment can be adjusted as your health and needs change.
Long-Term Weight Maintenance
Reaching a lower weight is not the end of treatment.
Long-term care includes planning for weight maintenance, medication decisions, nutrition and activity, metabolic health, and early action if weight begins to return.
Read more about weight maintenance after GLP-1 treatment.
Virtual Weight Loss Visits
Initial and follow-up visits are available in person or virtually.
Virtual visits are available to patients who are located in North Carolina or South Carolina at the time of the visit.
A virtual visit can include your medical history, medication review, treatment planning, prescription management, laboratory review, and follow-up.
Tanita body composition analysis requires an in-person visit at our Charlotte office.
If your particular plan has a referral, authorization, or telehealth administrative requirement, our office will work within that plan's requirements.
Self-Pay Options
Self-pay is available for visits and for medication, whether you use it alongside your benefit or instead of it.
Our visit pricing is published, so you can see the cost before you schedule anything. See CWL visit pricing and self-pay options.
Commercial copay savings cards and manufacturer self-pay programs are not the same thing.
Manufacturer commercial copay savings cards generally exclude people enrolled in TRICARE, Medicare, Medicaid, and other government-funded health programs.
Some manufacturers also offer separate cash or self-pay programs with their own eligibility rules. Those programs operate outside insurance and can change over time.
Our team can help you review the current options after your medical evaluation.
See current weight-loss medication savings and self-pay information.
If you are eligible for Medicare in addition to your TRICARE coverage, there may be an additional pathway for weight management medication. See our the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.
Why Physician-Led Weight Management Still Matters
Obesity is a chronic medical condition.
Medication can be an important part of treatment, but effective medical weight management also involves identifying health risks, treating related medical conditions, monitoring response to therapy, providing structured nutrition and activity treatment, and helping patients maintain progress over time.
Whatever your pharmacy benefit covers, physician-led weight management remains available at CWL. Depending on the reason for the visit, care may be billed to TRICARE as a covered medical service or provided through our published self-pay option.
You can also browse our weight-loss resources for physician-reviewed guides on medications, coverage, cost, and what treatment involves. For a broader explanation of how visit coverage and medication coverage work, see insurance and coverage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept TRICARE?
Yes. Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic accepts TRICARE and submits claims for covered medical services.
Whether a particular visit is covered depends on the reason for the visit and your benefit. TRICARE currently excludes office visits solely for nonsurgical obesity or weight reduction. When a covered medical condition is being evaluated or treated, coverage is based on that condition and the services provided. Self-pay is available for excluded weight-management care.
Will TRICARE cover my weight loss medication?
That depends on your plan and your pharmacy benefit, and your plan is the only one who can tell you.
Call the number on the back of your card before your visit and ask what your pharmacy benefit covers for weight management medication, what requires prior authorization, and what you would pay. Bring that answer with you.
When a prescription requires prior authorization, we prepare and submit it for you.
Do you file the prior authorization for me?
Yes. Our team prepares and submits the prior authorization, including the clinical documentation your plan requires, and follows up on it.
The approval decision is made by your plan and its pharmacy benefit, not by the clinic.
What if my medication is not covered, or only partly covered?
Self-pay options are available, and we will walk through them with you based on your medical situation.
Your medical care also continues either way. Evaluation, laboratory monitoring, nutrition and activity treatment, care for related conditions, and follow-up are not contingent on a pharmacy decision.
Can TRICARE patients have virtual visits?
Yes. CWL offers initial and follow-up virtual visits to patients located in North Carolina or South Carolina. Whether TRICARE covers a particular virtual visit depends on the service, your plan, and any referral requirements.
Tanita body composition analysis is performed only during an in-person visit at our Charlotte office.
Does accepting TRICARE mean my medication is automatically covered?
No.
Medical visits and prescription medications are separate insurance benefits.
We accept TRICARE for medical care. Your pharmacy benefit determines whether a particular medication is covered.
Do I need a referral?
Referral and authorization requirements vary by plan. Ask your plan when you call to verify your coverage, and let our office know what they tell you.
If your plan requires a referral or authorization, our office will work within that requirement.
Do you prescribe compounded GLP-1 medications?
No. Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic uses FDA-approved brand-name medications.
