Care directed by Dr. Joseph Okoye, MD, FACP, board-certified internal medicine, practicing medicine for over 35 years.

Care Anywhere in the State

Our clinic is in Charlotte, and Dr. Okoye is licensed to practice and prescribe throughout North Carolina. If you live too far from Eastway Drive for regular visits, virtual care is not a lesser version of the program. It is the same program.

  • Raleigh and the Triangle
  • Greensboro and the Triad
  • Winston-Salem
  • Durham and Chapel Hill
  • Fayetteville
  • Wilmington and the coast
  • Asheville and the mountains
  • Greenville and the east
  • Hickory and the foothills

If you are near Charlotte, in-person visits are available and you may prefer them. See the communities we serve.

What a Virtual Visit Actually Involves

  1. You send your information first. Height, weight, health history, current medications, and what you have tried before, through our secure screening form.
  2. You meet Dr. Okoye by video. A full medical evaluation, not a questionnaire reviewed by someone you never speak to. He asks about your other conditions, your medications, your sleep, and your history, because obesity rarely sits on its own.
  3. Labs are drawn near you. We order them to a lab convenient to you and review the results with you.
  4. Treatment is decided together. If medication is appropriate, the prescription goes to a licensed retail pharmacy near you.
  5. Follow-up continues by video. Dose adjustments, repeat labs, and changes to your other medications as your health improves.

One thing that requires an in-person visit. Tanita body composition analysis, which separates fat from muscle, is done at our Charlotte office. It is not something we can do remotely, and we will not pretend otherwise. Virtual patients are managed on weight, labs, blood pressure, symptoms, and clinical assessment, which is how medical weight management was practised long before body composition analysers existed. If you can travel to Charlotte occasionally, we will fold it in.

What We Prescribe

Brand-name, FDA-approved medications filled through licensed retail pharmacies. We do not prescribe compounded GLP-1 medications.

Read about Wegovy, Zepbound, Foundayo, or the daily pill options in our oral GLP-1 comparison. The full picture is in our GLP-1 medications guide.

Insurance for Virtual Visits

We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most commercial insurance plans. Self-pay options are also available.

Coverage depends on your plan, the service being provided, and your individual benefit. Coverage for medical services and coverage for prescription medications are separate benefits.

North Carolina Medicaid patients should read our NC Medicaid coverage guide. Medicare Part D patients may qualify for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge at $50 a month. TRICARE beneficiaries have their own rules. If you want the whole picture in one place, start with weight loss doctor that takes insurance.

Our team can help with insurance and prior-authorization requirements, but the health plan is the final authority on coverage and patient cost.

Why This Is Not an Online Prescription Service

The difference is not the video call. It is who is on the other end and what happens afterwards.

  • You see the same board-certified internal medicine physician at every visit, not whoever is next in a queue.
  • Your other conditions are managed, not ignored. As you lose weight, blood pressure and diabetes medications often need lowering. That is internal medicine.
  • Labs are ordered and reviewed, not skipped.
  • If medication is not right for you, you are told so.

More on that comparison: physician-led versus online care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you prescribe to my part of North Carolina?

Yes. Dr. Okoye is licensed in North Carolina and prescribes weight management medication throughout the state. Prescriptions go to a licensed retail pharmacy near you.

Do I ever have to come to Charlotte?

No, the program runs entirely by video if that suits you. The one exception is Tanita body composition analysis, which is done in the office. Many statewide patients never make the trip.

How do labs work?

We order them to a lab near you and review the results with you at your follow-up.

Is a virtual visit as thorough as an in-person one?

The evaluation, the history, the lab work, the prescribing, and the follow-up are the same. Body composition testing is the part that needs the office.

Does insurance cover a virtual visit?

Most plans we work with cover telehealth visits. Coverage depends on your plan and your individual benefit, and our team checks it before you are billed for anything unexpected.

What technology do I need?

A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera, and a private place to talk. Our team sends you the link and walks you through it if you would like.
