South Carolina Medicaid Accepted
Physician-Led Weight Loss Care for South Carolina Medicaid Patients
Yes. Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic accepts South Carolina Medicaid.
Your care is led by Dr. Joseph Okoye, MD, FACP, a board-certified Internal Medicine physician practicing medicine for over 35 years. Dr. Okoye is licensed in both North Carolina and South Carolina.
Initial and follow-up visits are available in person at our Charlotte office or virtually for patients located in South Carolina.
Medical weight management at our clinic brings together physician evaluation, prescription medication, nutrition and physical activity treatment, metabolic health assessment, ongoing monitoring, and long-term follow-up.
Yes, We Accept South Carolina Medicaid
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic participates in South Carolina Medicaid and provides physician-led medical weight management for South Carolina patients.
Having Medicaid does not mean your care begins and ends with whether one particular weight-loss medication is covered.
South Carolina Medicaid has an obesity management benefit that includes physician assessment, BMI screening, nutrition-focused treatment, behavioral treatment, therapeutic treatment, and ongoing follow-up.
At CWL, we look at the whole medical picture: your weight history, medications, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol risk, previous treatment, symptoms, goals, and the treatment options available to you.
Your medical benefit and your pharmacy benefit are different.
Your South Carolina Medicaid plan can cover medical care for obesity even when a particular weight-management medication is not included in the current pharmacy benefit.
What Your Care Includes
Comprehensive Medical Evaluation
Your first visit is a medical evaluation, not simply a prescription visit.
Dr. Okoye reviews your weight history, previous weight-loss efforts, current medications, medical conditions, symptoms, family history, risk factors, and goals.
The purpose is to understand why weight management has been difficult and which treatments fit your overall health.
See what to expect at your first visit.
Obesity and Metabolic Risk Assessment
Weight can affect much more than the number on a scale.
Your evaluation can include review of:
- blood pressure
- blood sugar and diabetes risk
- cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
- weight-related medical conditions
- medications that can affect weight
- sleep, activity, appetite, and eating patterns
When obesity and chronic medical conditions overlap, they should be treated together rather than as unrelated problems.

Tanita Body Composition Analysis
For patients seen in person, we offer Tanita body composition analysis.
Body composition gives us additional information about body fat, muscle, and other measurements that cannot be seen from weight alone.
Tanita testing is performed at the Charlotte office and is not available during a virtual visit.
Laboratory Evaluation and Monitoring
Laboratory testing is reviewed as part of your medical evaluation and treatment plan.
Testing is ordered based on your medical history and clinical needs rather than as a one-size-fits-all panel.
Labs can help identify or monitor concerns such as blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid function, kidney and liver health, and other medical factors that can affect weight treatment.
Prescription Weight Loss Medication Assessment
Prescription medication is one of the major tools we use in medical weight management.
Dr. Okoye reviews FDA-approved weight-loss medications, including GLP-1 treatment, in the context of your health history, current medications, goals, safety considerations, and insurance benefit.
Charlotte Weight Loss & Wellness Clinic uses FDA-approved brand-name medications. We do not use compounded GLP-1 medications.
Medication is integrated with your medical evaluation, nutrition and activity treatment, monitoring, and follow-up rather than treated as a stand-alone product.
Explore our prescription weight loss medication options, or read our GLP-1 medication guide.
Nutrition and Physical Activity Treatment
Nutrition and physical activity are active parts of obesity treatment.
The goal is not simply to tell you to “eat less and exercise more.”
Your plan is built around your health, medications, appetite, daily routine, physical limitations, weight history, and treatment goals.
South Carolina Medicaid also provides a medical nutrition therapy benefit for qualifying full-benefit members with obesity.
Care for Related Medical Conditions
Obesity often overlaps with medical problems such as high blood pressure, prediabetes or diabetes, abnormal cholesterol, and other metabolic conditions.
Because Dr. Okoye is an Internal Medicine physician, these problems can be considered as part of the same medical picture.
That matters because successful weight management should improve health, not simply change a number on the scale.

Insurance and Prior Authorization Support
Office-visit coverage and prescription-drug coverage are separate benefits.
When a prescription medication requires prior authorization, our team works with the information available from your health plan and submits the clinical documentation required for the request.
Approval is determined by the health plan or pharmacy benefit, not by the clinic.
Ongoing Physician Follow-Up
Medical weight management is ongoing care.
Follow-up visits allow us to review your progress, response to treatment, medication tolerance, nutrition and activity, weight trend, medical conditions, and next steps.
Your treatment can be adjusted as your health and needs change.
Long-Term Weight Maintenance
Reaching a lower weight is not the end of treatment.
Long-term care includes planning for weight maintenance, medication decisions, nutrition and activity, metabolic health, and early action if weight begins to return.
Read more about weight maintenance after GLP-1 treatment.
Virtual Weight Loss Visits for South Carolina Patients
Initial and follow-up visits are available in person or virtually.
Virtual visits are available to patients who are located in South Carolina at the time of the visit.
South Carolina Medicaid permits qualifying physician evaluation and management services by audiovisual telehealth, including new-patient services.
A virtual visit can include your medical history, medication review, treatment planning, prescription management, laboratory review, and follow-up.
Tanita body composition analysis requires an in-person visit at our Charlotte office.
If your particular Medicaid managed-care plan has a referral, authorization, or telehealth administrative requirement, our office will work within that plan's requirements.
Medication Coverage Under South Carolina Medicaid
South Carolina Medicaid's medical benefit and pharmacy benefit should be considered separately.
CWL accepts South Carolina Medicaid for physician-led medical care. Whether a particular prescription is paid by Medicaid depends on the drug, the diagnosis for which it is prescribed, the current South Carolina Medicaid pharmacy policy, and any required clinical criteria.
Current South Carolina Medicaid GLP-1 Policy
South Carolina Medicaid directs prescribers to its statewide Preferred Drug List for GLP-1 medications used for weight management.
As of the September 1, 2026 South Carolina Medicaid Preferred Drug List, Wegovy®, Zepbound®, and Saxenda® are not listed as covered weight-management GLP-1 medications.
The same current PDL separately lists several GLP-1/GIP medications in the anti-diabetes category. Ozempic®, Trulicity®, and Victoza® are listed as preferred agents, while Mounjaro® is listed as non-preferred. Clinical criteria apply.
A drug's coverage for one medical indication does not mean it is covered for a different indication.
Dr. Okoye prescribes medications according to your actual diagnosis and medical needs. We do not change or relabel a diagnosis simply to obtain insurance coverage.
Participation Does Not Guarantee Prescription Coverage
CWL's participation in South Carolina Medicaid means we accept the plan for medical care.
It does not mean every prescription medication is included in the pharmacy benefit.
Medication formularies and authorization requirements can change. Our office checks the current benefit when a prescription is being considered.
If a Weight Management Medication Is Not Covered
A pharmacy exclusion does not end your treatment options.
Treatment Under a Covered Medical Indication
Some medications have more than one FDA-approved medical indication.
If you have a condition for which a particular medication is covered, Dr. Okoye evaluates and treats that condition based on its own medical criteria.
Any prior authorization is submitted using your actual diagnosis, clinical history, and the health plan's requirements.
Paying for Medication Outside Your Medicaid Pharmacy Benefit
If a medication is medically selected but is not covered by your Medicaid pharmacy benefit, you can discuss cash-pay options with our office.
Commercial copay savings cards and manufacturer self-pay programs are not the same thing.
Manufacturer commercial copay savings cards generally exclude people enrolled in Medicaid, Medicare, TRICARE, and other government-funded health programs.
Some manufacturers also offer separate cash or self-pay programs with their own eligibility rules. Those programs operate outside insurance and can change over time.
Our team can help you review the current options after your medical evaluation.

South Carolina Medicaid Managed Care Plans
South Carolina uses both Medicaid managed care and fee-for-service coverage.
The state uses a single Preferred Drug List for the drug classes included on that list, while authorization and administrative processes can still involve the member's managed-care organization.
If you are enrolled in a South Carolina Medicaid managed-care plan, keep your current insurance card available when scheduling.
Our staff can use your plan information to determine the next steps for your visit and any applicable authorization requirements.

Why Physician-Led Weight Management Still Matters When a Drug Is Not Covered
Obesity is a chronic medical condition.
Medication can be an important part of treatment, but effective medical weight management also involves identifying health risks, treating related medical conditions, monitoring response to therapy, providing structured nutrition and activity treatment, and helping patients maintain progress over time.
South Carolina Medicaid's own physician guidance recognizes obesity management as a medical treatment program that includes physician assessment, nutritional care, behavioral treatment, therapeutic treatment, and follow-up.
That is the type of longitudinal care CWL is built to provide.
You can also browse our weight-loss resources for physician-reviewed guides on medications, coverage, cost, and what treatment involves.

Yes. Initial and follow-up visits are available in person or virtually. Virtual visits are available when you are located in South Carolina at the time of the visit.

Does South Carolina Medicaid cover Wegovy for weight loss?
The current September 1, 2026 South Carolina Medicaid Preferred Drug List does not list Wegovy as a covered GLP-1 medication for weight management.
Medication coverage can change, so we check the current pharmacy benefit when treatment is being planned.
Does South Carolina Medicaid cover Zepbound for weight loss?
The current September 1, 2026 South Carolina Medicaid Preferred Drug List does not list Zepbound as a covered medication for weight management.
That does not prevent you from receiving physician-led obesity care or discussing other medically appropriate treatment options.
Are GLP-1 medications covered if I have diabetes?
South Carolina Medicaid's current Preferred Drug List separately includes several GLP-1/GIP medications within its anti-diabetes drug class, with clinical criteria.
Coverage depends on the specific medication, your diagnosis, and the applicable pharmacy requirements.
A diabetes medication is prescribed for diabetes only when the patient actually has that diagnosis and meets the medical criteria.
Can I still receive weight-loss treatment if Medicaid does not cover a GLP-1 for weight management?
Yes.
Your medical treatment does not disappear because one pharmacy benefit is unavailable.
Your care can still include physician evaluation, metabolic-risk assessment, nutrition and physical activity treatment, treatment of weight-related medical conditions, appropriate laboratory monitoring, medication assessment, ongoing follow-up, and long-term weight-maintenance planning.
Does accepting South Carolina Medicaid mean my medication is automatically covered?
