What the Wegovy Tablet Is
The Wegovy tablet is oral semaglutide, approved by the FDA in December 2025 for long-term weight management in adults. It is the same active ingredient as the weekly Wegovy injection, in a form you swallow once a day.
It is a brand-name, FDA-approved medicine filled through licensed retail pharmacies. We do not prescribe compounded semaglutide in any form. More on the ingredient itself is on our semaglutide page.
How to Take It, and Why the Timing Is Strict
This is the part patients most need to get right, because the rules are not optional. They are what allow enough of the medicine to be absorbed.
- Once a day, in the morning.
- On an empty stomach, before you eat or drink anything else.
- With no more than 4 ounces of plain water. Not coffee, not juice, not more water than that.
- Swallow the tablet whole. Do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve it.
- Wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking any other oral medicine.
Semaglutide is a peptide, and peptides break down easily in the stomach. Food, other liquids, and other pills all interfere with absorption. Taking it with breakfast does not make it work a little less well, it can make it work considerably less well.
If you take other morning medications, tell Dr. Okoye. The 30-minute gap has to be planned around them, and for some medicines that changes what we recommend.
How the Dose Steps Up
You do not start at the full dose. The tablet has its own schedule, separate from the injection.

Who Tends to Prefer the Pill
- People who do not want to inject themselves, for any reason.
- People who travel often and would rather not manage refrigeration and sharps.
- People who already have a settled morning routine and will not find the empty-stomach rule difficult.
- People whose insurance covers the tablet more readily than the injection, which does happen.
The pill suits you less well if mornings are unpredictable, if you take several other morning medications, or if you know you would forget a daily dose. A weekly injection asks less of your memory.
Side Effects and Safety
Side effects are the same family as the injection, mostly digestive, most common during dose increases, and they usually settle: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, tiredness.
The safety profile is also the same, because the ingredient is the same. Wegovy carries a boxed warning about the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors based on animal studies. Do not take it if you or anyone in your family has had medullary thyroid carcinoma, if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2, or if you have had an allergic reaction to semaglutide. It is not for use during pregnancy, and should be stopped at least two months before a planned pregnancy.

Insurance and Pharmacy Considerations
We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most commercial insurance plans. Self-pay options are also available.
Coverage depends on your plan, the service being provided, and your individual benefit. Coverage for medical services and coverage for prescription medications are separate benefits.
Two things are specific to the tablet:
- Plans do not always treat the two forms the same. A plan that requires prior authorization for the injection may handle the tablet differently, or the reverse. Our team checks both when we submit.
- Pharmacy stocking varies. The tablet is newer, and not every pharmacy keeps it on the shelf. We can send the prescription where it is actually available rather than have you find out at the counter.

Can I switch from the injection to the tablet?
