Your BMI is a starting point, not the whole evaluation.

A physician-led evaluation can consider your medical history, medications, laboratory results, body composition, and health goals before treatment recommendations are made.

What BMI can tell you, and what it cannot

BMI compares your weight to your height. It is quick, it costs nothing, and it is useful as a first screening step across a population. That is genuinely worth something.

What it cannot do is look at you specifically. Two people with the same BMI can have very different amounts of muscle, very different amounts of body fat, and very different health risks.

It cannot separate muscle from fat

A muscular person can land in the overweight range while carrying little body fat.

It cannot show where fat is stored

Fat around the abdomen carries different metabolic risk than fat elsewhere, and BMI treats both the same.

It cannot see the rest of your health

Blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, sleep, and medications all matter, and none of them appear in a BMI number.

Adult BMI categories follow the CDC's published adult BMI categories, which describe BMI as a screening measurement rather than a diagnosis.

Why body composition matters

Body composition analysis estimates how your weight is distributed between body fat and lean mass. Alongside your weight, it provides estimates of body fat and lean mass that can be tracked over time.

That distinction matters during treatment. Someone losing weight steadily on the scale while losing muscle is not getting the outcome they want, and BMI alone would not show it. Tracking these estimates helps the clinician interpret changes and adjust the plan where appropriate.

Tanita body composition analysis is available during an in-person clinic visit. Initial and follow-up visits are also available virtually, but body composition testing requires an in-person visit at the clinic. See our physician-led medical weight loss services.

What happens during a physician-led evaluation

Care is led by Dr. Joseph C. Okoye, MD, FACP, a board-certified internal medicine physician practicing medicine for over 35 years. Internal medicine training means your weight is evaluated alongside the rest of your health rather than in isolation.

  1. Your history. Health conditions, current medications, previous weight loss efforts, and what has and has not worked.
  2. Objective measurements. Body composition analysis and relevant lab review.
  3. A plan built around your situation. Nutrition, activity, and, where appropriate, medication as one part of a complete plan.
  4. Follow-up. Regular visits to track progress and adjust.

Read more about what happens at your first visit, review insurance and coverage, or see pricing and payment options.

We accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most commercial insurance plans. Self-pay options are also available. Initial and follow-up visits are available in person or virtually.

We prescribe only FDA-approved brand-name medications. We do not prescribe compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMI?

BMI, or body mass index, is a number calculated from your height and weight. It is used as a screening measurement to sort weight into general categories. It is not a diagnosis and not a measurement of health on its own.

Is BMI the same as body fat percentage?

No. BMI does not measure body fat at all. It compares weight to height. Two people with an identical BMI can have very different body fat percentages, which is why body composition analysis adds information BMI cannot provide.

Does my BMI determine whether I qualify for medication?

No. BMI can be one part of an evaluation, but the website does not determine eligibility or recommend treatment. Final recommendations follow an individualized medical evaluation.

What does body-composition analysis add?

It provides estimates of body fat and lean mass, and it allows those estimates to be tracked over time. That can help the clinician interpret changes in body fat and lean mass, which a scale and a BMI number cannot distinguish.

Can I use this calculator during pregnancy?

No. This calculator is not intended for use during pregnancy. BMI is interpreted differently in pregnancy, and weight change during pregnancy should be discussed with your obstetric clinician.

Is this calculator intended for children or teenagers?

No. This calculator is for adults age 20 and older. BMI for children and teenagers is interpreted using age and sex percentile charts rather than the adult categories shown here.

This calculator is not intended for pregnancy, children, teenagers, diagnosis, or emergencies. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911.
